Gymnasium and Canopy
The re-development, restoration, and seismic strengthening at the Arts Centre of Christchurch, te Matatiki Toi Ora, comes after the heritage landmark was badly damaged by earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. The project is the largest heritage restoration in New Zealand. There are 23 buildings on site, of which 21 are listed by Heritage New Zealand as Historic Place Category 1.
A new feature is the canopy and courtyard linking the Gymnasium (1908) and Boys High (1881). It is located where the school's swimming pool (1882) used to sit until it was covered over in the 1950s.
- • The new canopy was designed by Warren and Mahoney
- • Architect for the Gymnasium was Collins and Harman
